But never fear — we’ll be back again soon. Mid to late summer is the plan. There will be occasional updates on this blog whenever we can find the time. You can also email us if you want to be alerted when we re-open the shop. Have a very great summer — it can’t come soon enough.

Cupcake Backlash!

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

The cupcake revolt has begun. I’m not adverse to the odd cupcake or three but I never quite got some people’s near-enough obsession with these not-so-little cakes.

Now insults are flying about these ”tarted-up little fairy cakes” and their “girth-widening goo”.

I think the cupcake’s glory days may be fading but their appeal will never truly die: sweet, kitsch, reminiscent of days of innocence and full of naughty but nice goodness — cupcakes put a smile on the lips (and at least an inch on the hips) and can make us feel that all is safe with the world.

I think our Love Soap has the same kind of appeal as cupcakes:

Just don’t be temped to eat it, though…

It took a long time coming but The Staggeringly Great Re-location Sale has now begun!

Update: now over but head over to our online shop to see what else is on offer.

Easter Break

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

This Easter — for the first time ever — we’re taking the long weekend break to work on some off-site Larkin & Catcher business. So all orders received in the next few days will be going out on Tuesday (6th April).

Slightly Creepy Easter Bunny (that eye…)

We’re known for never taking breaks and for getting orders shipped off to you in double-quick time (usually the same day you place the order) but the post won’t be operational for most of the weekend and we’ve got some wonderful exciting plans in the offing…

N’er Cast a Clout Til May is Oot

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

That’s what an elderly woman said to me as I took refuge from our latest snow showers (in April!?) in *Blackwell’s coffee shop. What she was wisely telling me was that it’s not such a great idea to venture out in this country coatless until the month of May is over.

A vintage ski girl with something very familiar underfoot

I was wearing my new-favourite Howies vintage-style woolly ski hoodie though, but even that is no match for what seems to be this endless, relentless, freeeeeeeeeeeezing winter. I very rarely feel the cold and never usually complain about the weather (warm hands, cold heart) but this is all a bit much — even I have now been forced to wear about four layers of clothing (to prevent frostbite). I saw a man at a bus stop last week with icicles hanging off his nose (at least I think that’s what it was) and I’m pretty sure that most people have been at the ‘enough, already’ stage with this ultra-long winter for some time now.

*I know big bookstore’s get slated for having no atmosphere, etc but sometimes the positives outweigh the negatives and my number one essential for a successful bookstore visit is that I am allowed to browse in peace, without a “can I help you” every five minutes – though a nearby source of good coffee is a welcome bonus.
